We have developed programs to educate the guests and residents of our community about the practices necessary to keep our local bears out of our dumpsters, homes and cars. Bears are unnecessarily killed because they have become habituated to humans and human food sources, and as a result they are deemed public safety threats. These behaviors have been learned due to human negligence and it is the responsibility of humans to reverse the cycle.
We have developed public outreach activities and events as well as fundraising events to support this mission. We are following the progress of the Human-Bear Management Policy adopted by the Town of Mammoth Lakes, and encourage Mono County ordinance modifications regarding trash management, unlawful feeding of wildlife and bear management protocols. Additionally we are taking steps to monitor compliance practices of businesses, multi-family dwellings and private residences in keeping dumpsters covered and locked at all times. The biggest step toward getting our bears back into the wild is to eliminate their habitual food sources in town and in campgrounds.
